Master's visit to the Pony Club Championships
Summertime for the Master is always busy and enjoyable. We have the time to go out around the country to visit many of the organisations that the Loriners support.
In August I travelled to Offchurch Bury near Royal Leamington Spa at the invitation of the Pony Club to attend their Championships.
In a beautiful parkland setting I watched polocrosse – a fearsome game on horseback which is a mix between lacrosse and polo, and I also witnessed the thrills and spills of the Mounted Games.
The youngsters who attended the Championships over ten days were obviously very happy to be back together again - the previous two years’ events having been cancelled.
I was hosted by the Chief Executive, Marcus Capel, and I was delighted to see the Loriners’ logo very prominently displayed along the driveway entrance to the park for all to see.
The picture shows Marcus Capel, the Master and the Loriners’ board.
"Meet and Greet" on Wednesday 8th September
On the evening of September 8th, the Company held a virtual “Meet and Greet'” during which some of our significant future events were highlighted:
- the Master's weekend on the Isle of Wight;
- the Livery Reception at the Old Bailey; and
- the Mansion House Banquet.
We do look forward to seeing you at these events.
The most substantial item of the evening was Kate English’s report on the Members survey that we conducted in May.
The response to the survey was excellent. 109 Members participated which means that the results are a genuine reflection of the Company and so are very useful.
United Kingdom Armed Forces Equestrian Association (UKAFEA) - Loriners Cup
The Master, Wardens and their wives, attended the Royal Navy’s leg of the United Kingdom Armed Forces Equestrian Association inter service competition on Friday 13thAugust, held at The David Broome Event Centre in Chepstow, South Wales.
They all left “base camp” and after an interesting but unscheduled visit to one of South Wales’s finest industrial estates (Under Warden navigating!) they arrived at The David Broome Centre to be warmly greeted by Captain Sean Moore and Cdr Jo Bollen RN, and their team.
After introductions and coffee, they watched the inter service dressage competition. Most of the competition was held in light rain but unfortunately, for the Army’s final rider, it began to rain quite heavily which hampered both horse and rider while trying to complete the set programme.
Once the dressage competition was completed, they were entertained to lunch with members of the RN team, and all riders from the three services. The Master and Upper Warden sat next to Ms Jabeena Maslin, who had only just returned from the Tokyo Olympics that Monday, having taken horses to Tokyo to compete in the Modern Pentathlon. The Under Warden sat between Rear Admiral Simon Charlier and Air Marshall Susan Gray (the Under Warden completing an illustrious trio), both of whom had ridden and represented their respective services.
After lunch, Capt. Moore spoke, and welcomed the Master and Wardens. Capt. Moore thanked The Worshipful Company of Loriners for their continued support for the UKAFEA and the inter service competition. The Master responded with thanks for the invitation to the Loriners to what had already been a wonderful day, and reinforced the Loriners commitment to the UKAFEA and confirmed how much the Loriners value the affiliation.
After lunch, they were escorted to the show jumping arena where they watched four members from each service compete in the show jumping element of the overall competition. The weather much improved, and all were treated to a fine exhibition of jumping by all horse and riders. After some very careful scoring and checking, the RN were confirmed as winners on the day, with the Army coming second and the RAF third.
The Master, Upper and Under Wardens were taken to the centre of the arena, where the Master presented rosettes, including one for the rider of the day, again going to the RN.
Once the prize giving and photography was completed, all retired to the pavilion for tea and cakes. The Master again thanked Capt. Moore, Cdr Bollen, and the whole RN team for a memorable day.
